Lets Talk Exfoliation. Physical V.S Chemical
Exfoliating the skin. Seems pretty straight forward, right ?
Well lets jump into why its so great to exfoliate, the benefits and the different ways to exfoliate.
So why its important to exfoliate?
While the skin has a natural shedding process ( every 28 days ) This tends to slow as we get older. In turn causing build up on the skins surface. Regular exfoliation will eliminate the barrier of dead skin cells leaving you with radiant skin. This also allows the skin to penetrate your moisturizer and skin care products more effectively.
An exfoliator that physically scrubs the skin. Most products are made up with round particles to help eliminate the dead skin cells from the skins surface. These can be both effective and damaging.
Physical Scubs with larger particles can be quite abrasive on the skin. These can cause micro-tears in the skins surface, leading to acne or irritation. If you prefer a physical scrub, look for something that is more finely milled or has small particles and work it into the skin gently. I tend to use these just once or twice a week. I also like rotating an exfoliating daily facial wash into my routine from time to time, that will gently exfoliate the skin as I cleanse.
This is my favourite physical exfoliator. The Iluma Intense Brightening Exfoliating Powder by Image Skincare. It is so gentle and so finely milled. I apply it with a small amount of water or I mix it right into my facewash. It creates a super gentle surface exfoliation without stripping my skin. It smells so amazing and leaves my skin glowing!
Another One of my favourites. The Eminence Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant. Again I use the product the same way. Either by adding water to the powder or mixing it in directly to my face wash. The powder and particles are also super finely milled so the product is very gentle on the skin. I find this to be slightly more abrasive than the Iluma powder but still gentle enough for everyday use. If you find a product is slightly to abrasive or rough on the skins surface, you can try adding more water or less product to your face wash for a more gentle exfoliation.
A Chemical Exfoliation can come in the form of a few types of products. Tonics, Topical Lotion Treatments. They will all contain various different types of hydroxy acids, such as AHA’s of BHA’s to gently dissolve away dead skin cells.
Again this will eliminate dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Making way for new healthy skin cells. This will give the skin radiance, eliminate breakouts and lessen clogged pores.
Sunday Riley Good Genes
The Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid treatment is one of my all time favourite chemical exfoliators. I saw such amazing results from using this product.
It is a clarifying treatment, containing BHA’s or lactic Acid. Its smoothing and a line reducing. It immediately exfoliates dull, pore-clogging dead skin cells revealing smoother, fresher, younger-looking skin. Fine lines appear visually plumped while the skin looks more radiant. It is perfect for all skin types. Clarifies, smooths, and retexturizes the skin.
It is quite expensive, but my experience with the product was so positive I would absolutely invest in it again.
Farmacy Honeymoon Glow AHA Resurfacing Nigh Serum
This is the closest dupe I’ve been able to find for the Sunday Riley Good Genes. The price point is also significantly lower.
I’m currently using this product in my line up and I have been loving it.
It is a three-in-one night serum that resurfaces, hydrates, and clarifies dull skin while you sleep. Formulated with a 14 percent AHA/BHA/gentle flower acids blend.
I have been using this once or twice a week for the past few months and my skin loves it. It helps to reduce my breakouts. It keeps my skin smooth and radiant. The smell is more pleasant than the Good genes which I appreciate. My skin feels so nice and hydrated the morning after applying this and it just gives your skin a super beautiful glow.
Pixi By Petra Glow Tonic
This product is probably the most well known product from Pixi, and with good reason. This is what introduced me to the brand. I’ve been using it in my collection and on my clients for the past few years.
The glow tonic is a liquid toner formulated with 5% Glycolic Acid. Ginseng improves circulation & energizes & Aloe Vera soothes & hydrates. I apply this to a cotton pad in the morning after I cleanse and then move on to the rest of my skin care. It is alcohol free so it doesn't dry my skin out. It gives the skin a beautiful glow and is a great way to prep the skin for makeup application.
